ABSTRACT

This research explores aspects of in-service teachers‟ transformative
learning in intercultural contexts. In our rapidly globalizing society, teachers
often move across cultures, as they seek for opportunities for their professional
developments with an expectation to become a better teacher. To comprehend
how teachers struggle and learn to work effectively in a new socio-cultural
setting, the research approaches the concept of intercultural competency from a
learner perspective.
With insights from Taylor‟s (1994) model of intercultural learning process,
which is based on Mezirow‟s (1991) theory of transformative learning, the
research adopts a qualitative methodology. It describes and analyzes the cultural
disequilibrium experienced by six veteran teachers from Thailand, Malaysia, and
the Philippines during a 3-month teacher exchange program in Korea.
Findings address various types of cultural disequilibrium that the exchange
teachers experienced while being involved in activities at their Korean host
schools. In the beginning, the participants struggled as they recognized a gap
between their desire for challenge and fear of teaching in a new classroom
setting. They also experienced significant language barriers in communication.
Throughout the program, they confronted disorienting experiences regarding
social acceptance, relationship with students, classroom management, concept of
time, language barrier in and out of school, use of teaching equipment, and
perception of others. Towards the end of the exchange program, the teachers
continued to confront dilemmas as they held different thoughts on the roles and
responsibilities of a teacher, a student, and a school in Korean culture.
Findings also demonstrate six common approaches that the research
participants adopted in attempts to resolve their cultural disequilibrium: as an
Observer, a Participant, a Friend, an Educator, an Ambassador, and an Avoider.
With the brief opportunity windows we have in teacher professional
development programs specifically targeting for intercultural competency, this
qualitative study offers practical contributions as well as theoretical insights for
teacher educators. The study cannot claim that the participants have increased or
will increase their intercultural competency from teacher exchanges. However,
this study does highlight the role of immersive experiences, with disequilibrium
as a potential trigger to promote transformative learning of the teachers who are
considered as key stakeholders for quality education in our global society.
